AIKIDO ARCHIVES of NEWFOUNDLAND
MUN CHANGES LOCATION. ALL HANDS PITCH IN WITH THE MOVE. A LAST FAREWELL TO THE COMBAT ROOM AT MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY CAMPUS. GREAT CROWD OF AIKIDO PEOPLE WITH IVAN BOOTH SHIDOIN, 4th DAN. Courtesy MUN Aikido Club.
For 33 years MUN Aikido was located on campus at Memorial University. However with the closure of the Combatives Room in 2011 the dojo moved off-campus to a facility on Elizabeth Avenue. Presently, having moved a few years ago a second time, MUN Aikido is now part of the St. John’s Martial Arts Center at 21 Mews Place, St. John's. . The precursor of MUN Aikido may well have been St. Augustine's Dojo, operating out of St. Augustine's Church basement on the corner of Westerland Road and Elizabeth Avenue during the mid to late seventies. St. Augustine's began under the leadership of Dr. Michael Langford, a MUN Philosophy Professor, who studied under Graham Burt Sensei. The dojo moved from the church basement during the late '70's/ early '80's to the Combat Room at MUN. There may well have been a dojo operating out of the Combat Room in 1980 under Les Mulholland. Whatever the case, the two became one and today Ivan Booth Shidoin is Chief Instructor of MUN Aikido Club.
