Gloucester - Southgate Street, Art Tower
Art Tower in Southgate Street, Gloucester, sometimes referred to as St Kyneburgh’s Tower. It relates to the legend of St Kyneburgh who was the first Abbess of the old minster in the 7th Century, which became Gloucester Cathedral, and was related to the Hwiccan King Osric. By the middle ages local legend has St Kyneburgh as a Saxon princess who was killed by being thrown down a well, with the well becoming known as St Kyneburgh’s fountain and on this site St Kyneburgh’s church was supposed to have been built and her remains later buried there. The tower piece represents a column of water emblematic of the well shaft, but the form of the tower is also pierced by light through the circular aperture at the top to represent her ascension to heaven. These two contrasting aspects can be seen from outside and inside the piece.
