Sutton Coldfield railway memorial plaque
The memorial plaque at Sutton Coldfield station. It commemorates those who lost their lives in the railway accident that occurred on 23 January 1955.
A York-Bristol express had been diverted at Wichnor Jn onto the secondary route to Birmingham because of engineering work on the main line. Although a pilotman was on board, the 30mph speed limit through Sutton Coldfield was not observed and the train derailed in the station. 17 people were killed including the pilotman and the fireman.
