Let's Be Careful Out There
A 19 year old kid was killed by a great white shark yesterday off the California coast -
VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (KTLA) -- A 19-year old college student from Riverside County cried out for help as a shark flashed out of the water and attacked without warning.
The attack took place Friday morning just before 9 a.m. about100 yards off Surf Beach.
Lucas Ransom, a student at UC, Santa Barbara, was boogie- boarding with a friend when a shark bit his leg off, said Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown.
His friend, Matthew Garcia, says he was only two feet from Ransom when the shark rose out of the water without warning.
"When the shark hit him, he just said, 'Help me, dude!' He knew what was going on," Garcia told the AP.
"It was really fast. You just saw a red wave and this water is blue - as blue as it could ever be - and it was just red, the whole wave. Even the barrel was red."
He estimates the shark was 18 feet long.
