Preston Tanks 2
Not a rest day as such as I'm actually due on duty at 23.30 so I was not up to much and 'er indoors was working so when me old Flickrite chum "Acton Wells Junction" happened to mention he was in Leeds and was planning to get the train out to Hebden Bridge I decided I'd get the trusty Mondeo out and head off over the Pennines to meet up.
Rendezvouing at Hebden Bridge at 08.50 saw a visit to the box there and then the short hop was made to Milner Royd Junction.
The aim of the exercise was to record two of the four boxes that are due to close this coming October but whilst on location it'd be rude not to step outside to record the passing of this beauty. Not a location you'd choose to capture the train in and the previous days glorious blue skys are a distant memory but still a lovely sight and as such I decided it was worthy of a post.
Running slightly late, 6E32 the "Preston Tanks" or more precisely the 08.55 Colas Ribble Rail to Lindsey Oil Refinery has been marginally signal checked as it approaches Milner Royd Junction. It has had to give way to 1B18 an ontime York to Preston service. With the peg coming off lots of effort went into getting the train back up to speed.
The train has run everyday this week it would appear with a pair of grids on the pointy end and short consists. This train of 9 tanks possibly being the biggest one of the week.
It's not all gloom and doom out there, this stretch of track in recent years has seen very little freight, indeed this service has probably been the only constant but it now has other freight flows to keep it company.
The Liverpool - Drax Bio Mass and Knowsley - Wilton bin liners are also added to by the Manchester - Roxby Gullet land fill and the very recently (and no doubt to be short lived) Redcar - Fidlers Ferry coal, I'm sure there are others.

Who'd have thought all those years ago when Ed Burkhardt's 66's were wiping out the incumbent traction that 20 years after they first landed on these shores that we'd still be seeing a pair of grids screaming at full tilt over the Pennines.
