The Medal Index Card for Private 47438 Ronald L. Berry, Royal Defence Corps, is held at the National Archive under reference WO 372/2/118411

He was previously Private 2102 Norfolk Regiment.

His Regimental Service Medal Roll shows that he served with 17 I.B.D. (6th Battalion Norfolk Regiment) and then the 1st Battalion, Norfolk Regiment – both with Service Number 2102.

He was entitled to the British War Medal & the Victory Medal.

 

The Summary of the Army Register of Soldiers Effects records him as dying at “Erniskillen.”

 

His Service Records do not appear to have survived the incendiary attack during the Blitz on the Warehouse where all the Army service records were stored.

The accompanying notes read:-

Ronald was the son of John and Harriet Helen Berry, of 119 Spencer Street in Norwich. He died on 15th December 1918, at the age of 22 whilst serving in the 460th Company Royal Defence Corps. He is buried in grave 4. 824 in Norwich Cemetery.

 

(A Private 71856 R. Johnson, 460th Protection Company, Royal Defence Corps, died on the 21st November 1918 who is buried at Saint Patrick’s Cemetery, Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland.)

The Berry family were still living at 119 Spencer Street. Parents John, (47) and Harriet Helen, (43) have been married 26 years and have had 11 children, of which 9 were then still alive. Still single and living at home were Mary Elizabeth, (19, Boot Machinist), Constance Mabel, (15, Boot Machinist), Ronald Leslie, (13), Victor Albert, (11), Cissy Dorothy, (5) and Russel George William, (10 months) – all born Norwich.
