...how do you solve a problem like Maria?
Ahhhh...the Sing Along Sound of Music! My sister had gone a few years ago at the Hollywood Bowl and raved about it--I have been wanting to go ever since. I finally got the chance (family in tow this past weekend) as the show finally rolled into our town! While we all enjoyed it, it was my daughter and me who *thoroughly* enjoyed it--though my husband thinks I enjoyed it most of all...which is, I think, true.
It was the matinee family showing, so we had to keep it "kid friendly," but I still made my censored campy comments and had a blast. I was giddy from the moment the "hills" appeared on screen. When we saw the little spec that was Maria on the screen, we all started chanting in soft voices, "Julie, Julie, Julie." As she got bigger on screen, we chanted "Julie" louder and louder...until the crescendo where she did her twirl and we all stood up with arms in air and yelled, "Sing, Julie, sing!!!" We sang our hearts out, hissed at the Baroness (though to this day, I *loooove* *every* one of her outfits in that movie), booed at the Nazis, Rofled/Ruffed at Rolfe, saluted the captain, and waived our Eldelweiss like lighters in a concert.
If you love the Sound of Music and have never been to the Sing Along version, if it rolls into your town, do check it out. Note: the campier the crowd, the better.
