Built By The Poor, Destroyed By Governmental Negligence
These homes in the Lover 9th Ward were built by African-Americans who were determined to own something of their own, no matter how humble. Over time, their descendants renovated and expanded these homes as their money allowed. They epitomized the realization of the American dream: if you work hard and save your money, you too can live in your own home. Due to the city's neglect, the levees broke, flooding the area with water and destroying this entire historically African-American community of home owners.
