Church of San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore
The Church of San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore, located in Milan, is the church of a convent. It was the seat of the most important female monastery in the city belonging to the Benedictine order.
The church was built at the beginning of the 16th century. If, in fact, the exterior facade of the church does not attract attention, the interior instead reveals one of the most precious treasures of the city – so much so that it is called “Sixtine Chapel of Milan”.
The church is composed of a single nave divided into two parts, that reserved for the faithful and that for the sisters of the convent. A monumental carved wooden choir shares the church.
The decoration was entrusted to Bernardino Luini, a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci. The frescoes – covering an area of 4,000 m² – depict biblical scenes – the beautiful fresco of Noah's Ark, with unicorns – from the life of Jesus and the saints.
