ZAGREB – THE LOWER TOWN
ZAGREB is the capital of Croatia and has nearly 800,000 inhabitants for a country of more than 4 million Croatians. At the heart of the country's culture and economy, Zagreb is also the administrative and political center of the Republic of Croatia. In addition, the city hosts the seat of the Croatian parliament and government.
The current city is the result of two medieval counties that developed for centuries on two hillsides. These two counties were surrounded by mighty walls and towers. They merged in the 17th century. to become the Upper Town (Gornji grad) or its historic heart perched on a hill.
In the Lower Town (Doni Grade), built in the 19th century, the splendor of Austro-Hungarian architecture and monuments, in a romantic style, blends with its large tree-lined avenues which contrast with socialist buildings.
THE PAVILION OF ARTS
One of the most representative buildings of Zagreb is the Pavilion of Arts, an admirable building that stands in front of the main train station of Zagreb on the square of King Tomislav, the first Croatian king. This building with a metal construction and a glass dome has hosted the biggest exhibitions in Zagreb and Croatia for 120 years.
A curiosity: the Arts Pavilion was built to represent Croatia and its artists at the millennium exhibition in Budapest in 1896, during the celebrations of the millennium of Hungary. This vast pavilion with works by Croatian artists was installed in Budapest and he spent two years there.
Thanks to the most modern construction techniques, its metal structure was dismantled and transported by train to Zagreb. And there, two Viennese architects, Fellner and Helmer, designed the building that was to support this structure.
