Voted July 1959 under a five-year programme, with half the cost being paid by United States. Based on the German Type 207, but with a stronger hull for deeper diving, and revised equipment. They can fire the US Mk 37 and Bofors Tp 61 wire-guided torpedoes. Svenner, equipped for officer training, has a second periscope and was 1m longer.
