HMS ARROW
Information published in the 1980 Program for Chatham Navy Days
On behalf of everyone in HMS ARROW I am proud to welcome you onboard one of the newer ships of the Fleet and hope that you will find your visit interesting.
HMS ARROW is one of the Navy's Type 21 Class Frigates. Powered entirely by gas turbine engines, she is capable of very rapid acceleration and deceleration. She is armed with 4 Exocet anti-Ship missiles, a highly accurate 4.5 inch gun and Seacat surface-to-air missiles. Additionally she carries the LYNX helicopter for use both in anti-submarine and anti-surface Ship operations. A high degree of automation in Type 21 Frigates has produced a significant reduction in manpower needs with HMS ARROW's crew consisting of 11 Officers and 160 ratings.
HMS ARROW took part in the Group 8 Deployment last year and visited, The Seychelles, Australia, New Zealand, 3 South Pacific Islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Singapore, India and Israel before returning to UK just before Christmas. We were received with great hospitality everywhere and the friendliness of everyone indicates the affection still felt towards the United Kingdom. The deployment was not all play and successful exercises were held with the Royal Australian, the Royal New Zealand and American Navies. The Group 8 Deployment also provided a much needed UK military presence East of Suez, as visible evidence to the Soviets that the West has major interests (both trade and political) in that area and still possesses the capability to deploy for sustained operations.
This year is, perhaps, less exciting, with HMS ARROW being engaged on a series of important equipment trials and training tasks. There are also several foreign visits planned to give the variety essential for a balanced programme.
