Corps of Discovery # 7
Both leaders took part in recruiting members of the expedition. They looked for young men who could endure months of difficult travel and hard labor. Those chosen were from many professions: farmer, soldier, blacksmith, hunter, carpenter, river man, trapper.
The group spent the winter of 1803-04 at Camp Wood, set up on land across the river from St. Louis. A reconstruction of part of that camp is shown above. Lewis and Clark made many trips here and there buying and accumulating supplies needed for the long journey.
