Trails West # 29
Chimney Rock is a sentinel that was visible to oncoming wagons for two or three days. This rock formation, a conical mound of rock surmounted by a 120-foot vertical spire, served as a guide to mountain men, trappers and traders, and is noted in virtually every emigrant diary. It was a good camping spot with excellent water nearby.
It is now a National Historic Site. The spire is gradually crumbling. Experts believe that it was 40 to 50 feet higher in Oregon Trail days.
