We were in a museum in Glasgow, Sheree, Shuggie and I. I hate museums. There are always so many more interesting things to see when we have so limited a time.
But Shuggie, our host, was intent on showing us around his university...and I went along for the ride.
I am so glad I did. Shuggie knew exactly what he was doing. Let me explain.
My day changed the instant I saw this statue. I was entranced. I was so utterly captivated that, while I stood there, arms limp at my side looking at it, Sheree and Shuggie disappeared.
The story of this fabulous art: the girl's mother has died and the man is comforting her. Simple, huh?
I just stood there, looking at it. I saw the position of their bodies, the child's tragically blank face, the man's gentle manner and I found a lump forming in my throat. The lump nearly became a tear and I took this shot at that moment.
The original is cold white stone, lovely in it's own right. But I really feel that if I am going to make a photograph of someone else's art, I really need to change it with the crop, the lighting, the strokes and that is what I have done.
Looking at this statue was one of the most powerful moments of the trip. So lovely...so sad...so.....broken.
So thanks, Shuggie. Thank you very much.
