When Worlds Collide #7
It’s interesting just how far as a species we will go to achieve our desires. We will more than happily kill one another for any reason, because we need to, or because we can. There are few other species that do that. Kill because they can. Perhaps that’s why we remain the dominant species on this planet. Not because of our vast intellect or survival instinct, but that deep down, whether we like to admit it or not, we're all monsters.
No-one likes to face the monsters of this world. Whether they’re just works of fiction that lie beneath a child’s bed, the politicians that the fools believe care about them or the most powerful man on the planet that many regard as a god.
Amazing how easily people can be deceived by such an elaborate disguise. A man whose talents far exceed those of mortal men who wants nothing more than to help the innocent. What a load of non-sense.
Worst of all?
They believe it.
A man who halts natural selection by refusing to let the weak perish is anything but a savior. He’s our doom. Yet no-one can see it. They think it’s so simple. This man with superpowers wants nothing more than to help us so he must be the good guy right? It's moments like those that I find myself being reminded of what I've always known. People are idiots. Some even call him the future of the human race with all his ‘divine’ powers.
But I know better.
Better still.
I know him.
I know where he comes from and just how it is he gets those magnificent powers of his. You’re no God sent here to guide us. God is merely a work of fiction created by the simplest of minds to rationalize that which they cannot explain. He’s no God you fools. He’s an alien, and though he will never admit to it, I know he has been sent here to infiltrate our ranks. Gain our trust, then destroy us. The sad truth about evolution, the strongest triumph over the weak.
I will not allow myself to become the weak.
“You going to keep staring at the thing all day?”
Eiling, he strikes me as man that believes in God.
Probably explains why he’s nothing than a government thug, but fortunately for me. He’s my thug for the moment, just like how dear old Otis is my Father's thug.
“It’s a tempting prospect. What do you want?”
“He’s secured just as you ordered.”
“Good. They’ll be here to collect him soon.”
“They?”
“A third party who I’ve agreed to hand Mr. Martin over to.”
“Are you sure that’s the best thing to do sir? This man is practically a living reactor with all the energy he keeps giving off, we can barely contain him never mind an unknown third party.”
“Calm yourself Colonel. These men are more than adept at dealing with men in his situation. They’ll know what to do with him. Now ensure all is ready for when they collect him.”
“Aren’t you going to let him see his family before they take him away?”
“It’s out of my hands now. There’s nothing I can do.”
Another fault of humans.
The constant deception between one another. There’s plenty I can do to ensure Mr. Martin sees his wife and child before he’s taken away but I have no interest in granting that request. Joseph Martin is merely a pawn on the chessboard, and like all pawns he will be sacrificed for a greater purpose.
Specifically the support of a certain person when the time finally comes to appoint the next CEO of Lexcorp once my Father steps down. Most companies allow it so the son can take up the fathers mantle once the old man steps aside. But my father naturally has to be the exception to that and has already made it clear that when he does finally step down from Lexcorp neither Lena or I will get all the family shares of the company. Instead he’s going to give half to me and half to Lena so I can’t own the company outright.
Senile old man.
“What is that thing you were looking at anyway?”
I redirect my attention to the display in front of me that I was staring at whilst in deep thought.
“It’s the new Lexcorp Defense Drone Mark 2.”
“Mark 2? But you only started putting the Mark 1 into mass production last year.”
“Just because the world slows down to discuss the pointless ethics of such trivial matters doesn’t mean I’m required to.”
“So what’s the aim of this one then?”
“The usual stuff you'd expect greater battery efficiency, improved optics and scanners, hell this thing could replace all active servicemen in the US army. At the moment I’m considering having it be your replacement after that stunt you pulled.”
“Excuse me?”
“You and I both know what we’re talking about. Your commanding officer had me brought on for this task specifically and you nearly jeopardize everything by having a stand off with Superman. Imagine what would have happened had he chosen to follow us? What then?”
“Then we’d have taken care of him.”
“Oh really? I’m curious to know how considering bullets bounce off his skin and I doubt explosive rounds have much more of an effect.”
Eiling falls silent, I’m in the right with this argument and he knows it. He always knows it and yet he persists in arguing with me. What a fool.
“Make sure Martin is ready for transportation I don’t want any more problems with this Eiling.”
He begrudgingly says the words yes sir and walks off to ensure all is prepared. You’ll have what I promised you shortly Mr. Michaels so you had better to give me what I'm owed when the time comes….
