The Unseen

There was a queer smell in the air, Denison thought to himself… something wasn’t quite right.

It was November, 1835 and Bexar County was a warzone. The battles on either side of the San Antonio river were vicious and deadly. The insurgent Texians were hellbent on driving the Mexicans out and General Martin Perfecto de Cos was having none of it… and losing bad at the same time. Meanwhile, to maintain discipline amongst his troops, Texian leader Stephen F. Austin issued an order stating that "All riotous conduct and noisy clamorous talk is specially prohibited". In an attempt to end hostilities without further casualties, Austin sent a note to Cos to surrender, which he returned unopened. So affronted was he that in a blinding rage, he summoned Catemaco, the dreaded brujo. Secretly, he and the sorcerer had been harbouring a weapon that, if unleashed, could bring untold death and annihilation to both sides of the war. Seething with such an anger towards the Texians and clearly not of his right mind, he ordered Catemaco (who was only too eager for his own part) to release El Gran Dragón.

Earlier that day, one of the companies, commanded by James C. Neill, arrived at the battlefront with two new six-pounder cannons. The pair of soldiers assigned to maintain watch over the one stationed at the river’s edge were Denison D. Doobs and Will Agnew. It was now nighttime, the moon hung full in the sky and most troops were encamped within the city’s fortifications.

Will was dozing slightly when Denison began sniffing in the air; a peculiar odor was wafting in on the breeze. “Do you smell that?”

His watch partner stirred and mumbled an incoherent, “Nah.”

However, before Denison could ask for a clarification, his eyes widened, as the light was suddenly being blocked by a huge shadow rising up from below the riverbank, giant wings slowly pushing the putrefied air towards them. In a petrified panic, the two soldiers, madly scrambling, fled towards Austin’s command post. Wildly, they described what they saw but, Austin rebuffed them, saying that they were trying to stir up trouble and had them both sent to the lockup. On the way, as they were being escorted, Denison somehow managed to break free of his captors and ran back to the cannon emplacement. Breathlessly, he stood and watched as again the huge shape rose. It was square in front of the cannon’s barrel. He, without thinking, set the fuse and kaboom! The cannonball shot out straight into the creature’s chest and with a loud wail, it splashed into the river’s waters… never to be “seen” again.

It was November, 2017 and the sun shone brilliantly, as tourists and the like, enjoyed the views from one of the many Riverwalk bridges that spanned the San Antonio river. Antonella Fernandez was visiting from Tucson and marveled as a number of yellow-rumped warblers took to the sky. Somewhere close by, ‘Freeman in Paris’ by Joni Mitchell was playing. Billy-James Agnew (?) and his newly-wed wife, Choo Su Wang hugged each other, reveling in their consummated union and anticipation of a life together. “Beautiful, isn’t it, Choo?” Her only reply was to squeeze his buttock. Margery Lewis noticed a peculiar odor in the air… it seemed to be wafting up from below the bridge. Its source was…UNSEEN!
