1962: Training ship HMAS SWAN [II] in her last year of service, in Sydney - RAN, courtesy Ronnie Bell.

6303. Another image of the post-WWII midshipman's training and sometime survey ship HMAS SWAN [II], whose WWII exploits were discussed in comments under the last entry, and in earlier entries. The 1060 ton Grimsby Class sloop is seen here in Sydney.

Since construction of the Blues Point Tower, Australia's first high-rise apartment block on McMahon'sd Point under the Sydney Harbour bridge is completed, and from the stage of construction of the base of the Sydney Opera House to the left, we can say this photo was taken in 1962, It was SWAN' [II]'s last year of service. First commissioned on Jan. 21, 1937, by Commander [later VADM, Sir ] Roy Dowling, RAN, she paid off on Sept. 21, 1962, having given more than 25 years of service.
