6079. Another Gearing Class destroyer with a Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernisation [FRAM} conversion, USS ROGERS is also seen from HMAS BRISBANE [II] on the Vietnam gunline in 1971. USS ROGERS was built by Consolidated Steel Corporation at Orange, Texas, and completed on Mar. 26, 1945. She earned five battle stars off Korea and three of Vietnam, in addition to a Meritorious Unit Commendation for her actions in Hawaiian waters on Jan. 14, 1969, when she helped fight raging fires of the super carrier USS ENTERPRISE, caused by an accidental Mk-32 Zuni aircraft rocket ignition.
ROGERS - named for three brothers killed killed in action on board USS NEW ORLEANS during the Battle of Tassafaronga in the Solomons in 1942 - had pulled close alongside and trained six hoses on the fires in the face of exploding bombs and shrapnel. ENTERPRISE itself lost 27 men in the fires, with 314 injured and 15 aircraft destroyed,
ROGERS was decommissioned on Oct 1, 1980 and transferred to the Republic of Korea in July the following year. Renamed ROKS JEONG JU, she served until Dec. 31, 1999, and survives now as a museum ship at SapKoyohp National Sightseeing Resort at Dangjin-Gun, Chung Nam Province, South Korea [details from Wikipedia].
Her combined service life was almost 55 years, longer than USS SHELTON. Another likely record .
