A framed 1950s view of the Bay Class frigate HMAS MURCHISON - RAN.
4085. With steam raised, and a sea boat being hauled up on its davits, the 1,544-2200 ton HMAS MURCHISON appears to be on the point of departure from Garden Island.
The United Nations US naval commanders were not so happy when it was announced thnat MURCHISON as a frigate, was to replace the destroyer HMAS BATAAN in May 1951, but MURCHISON, LCMD A.N. Dollard, RAN , went on to earn fame for her close-range exploits in the Han River Estuary, and performed exceptionally meritorious service there over an eight-month tour.
First commissioned on Dec. 17, 1945, MURCHISON was paid off on January 31, 1956, and finally went to breakers in Japan with HMAS HAWKESBURY at the end of 1956.
