NAVY LIFE: Essay by Kim Dunstan - Off Singapore, 1960.
2863. Kim Dunstan writes: It is Sunday afternoon on HMAS MELBOURNE [II], circa 1960, and after a busy week of flying and exercising with other ships there is a pause for the ship’s company to relax and soak-up a little sunshine. This is important as many sailors working below decks may go for days without seeing the light of day. Besides, the sea is like a millpond and the ship is about a day’s sailing out of Singapore - and a bloke needs to build-up his energy for a trip ashore. For others on the ship this is an opportunity to write a letter home, to do some study, read a book or do some laundry. Even the Fairey Gannets, with their wings folded, appear to be enjoying the breeze and a well earned rest.
