1940 Scrapbook: The County Class cruiser HMAS CANBERRA [I] seen in the Illustrated London News publication 'British Warships' - Photo credited Cribb.
1764. As a function of its geography, Australia went into WWII with more major combat ships than the other Dominions - although the Royal Canadian Navy was to undergo an immense expansion for the convoy battles of the Atlantic, and would exceed the RAN in size eventually.
Both the heavy cruisers HMAS CANBERRA [above] and HMAS AUSTRALIA [II] were ordered as a result of Australia's sense of isolation and vulnerability in the 1920s.
When war came with Japan, CANBERRA was never to get the modernisation foreshadowed in the ILN book's caption. As Cribb is credited, this appears to have been a 1928 image made in the U.K. when CANBERRA [I] was first commissioned, and visited by King George V. Unlikely her more worldly sister HMAS AUSTRALIA [II], however, CANBERRA never returned to Britain, or European waters, after her delivery voyage to Australia.
