Dec. 6, 1964: Army DUKWs circle HMAS SYDNEY [III] in 'Abandon Ship' exercise - Jim Fenwick, Courier Mail.

840. Fast troop transport HMAS SYDNEY [III] has taken on a 10 degree list for the purposes of an 'Abandon Ship' exercise in Brisbane's Moreton Bay.

The former aircraft carrier had been converted to a troop transport in 1962-63, and she carried Australian and New Zealand troops in large scale amphibious exercises in Queensland waters in late 1963.

In May 1964 SYDNEY carried Army and RAAF personnel and equipment to Malaysia for service in the confrontation with Indonesia. The 'Abandon Ship' exercise seen here appears to have been a precautionary test carried out in advance of her first trooping voyage to Vietnam, which took place in May 1965.
