Sept. 23, 1977: HMAS DUCHESS, paying off, joins her successor at the fitting out wharf, Woolloomooloo - RAN.
6867.Sequential to the preceding image, and again wonderfully high resolution and detailed in large size, the Daring Class training destroyer HMAS DUCHESS will berth astern of the RAN's new training ship, her successor HMAS JERVIS BAY, as the DUCHESS pays off. Notice that she had been given a more handsome aft funnel during her conversion to a training ship - the original 'stovepipe' aft funnel having been the most universally criticized aesthetic aspect of these otherwise very handsome ships [in Australia, VAMPIRE and VENDETTA were given new aft funnels also, during their half-life reconstructions].
HMAS JERVIS BAY assumed the training rile from early 1978, giving seamanship and navigational training to officer cadets. In 1987 the ship's aft deck was modified to take a Sea King helicopter; but more ambitious plans that would have enabled the largish ship to take on a flight of six helicopters were shelved.In December 1992, JERVIS BAY's cap;acity to act as a troop ship were brought into play when she was used to support the 1RAR's deployment to Mogadishu in the US-led Operation Restore Hope.
JERVIS BAY paid off on April 18, 1994, and was sold late that year. Renamed AGIOS ANDREAS, after substantial modifications that increased her passenger and vehicle capacity, and increased her tonnage to 11,109 grt, she was employed on ferry services between Greece and Turkey, for the Greek company Med Link Lines.Sold again in 2003 and renamed AJMAN LEADER she began ferry operations in the Persian Gulf, operating from Dubai. The following year, 2004, she was sold again, and sent for scrapping by the beach shipbreakers at Alang, India, having given a total 35 years service, which had began for ANL on the Bass Strait ferry run between Melbourne and Tasmania.
