Crannóg like dwelling (Ethiopia)
Taken on location; Outside Butajira, a town south of Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, Africa. 2006.
We found the similarity of the dwelling place of the Ethiopian people living in the mountains to the celtic (irish and scots) crannóg living structures quite amazing particularly given that the earliest crannóg's were estimated to be 3200-2800 BC (wikipedia) and this was Ethiopia 2006. The Irish/Scots version of the dwelling were obviously water bound for different reasons.
You can make out a lady (middle/right) which gives an idea of scale. Close up of her (slightly different angle) here www.flickr.com/photos/41265982@N00/1292542871/
Internally they had an open fire lighting which served for cooking but hadn't provision for a chimney, thus smoke 'seeped' through the thatched roof.
Truly amazing to see.
