Children from Citizen Nagar smile for the camera. From the lack of a proper school to the poisoned water supply they must bathe in, it is the children of Citizen Nagar who suffer the most from living in this slum on the edge of Ahmedabad. Some were only infants when the mobs of 2002 destroyed their homes and drove their families from their old neighborhoods; others were born in Citizen Nagar and have spent their entire lives here.
Children around seven years of age may have been born from one of the many rapes used by the rioters to inflict terror, pain, and humiliation on innocent Muslims in “revenge” for the burning of a train in Godhra.
Will they grow up to raise a second generation in Citizen Nagar? Or will they be able to gather the resources and the determination to make a new start elsewhere? These children have watched as corrupt and callous government officials trampled on their parents for trying to make Citizen Nagar an inhabitable place. For them, the state doesn’t give. It takes away.
