The news that Gordon Brown has lost the support of the newspaper The Sun might signal to many that his hopes for re-election at the next General Election is as likely as pigs falling from the sky. The reason why this is considered a significant paradigm shift in the political arena lies within the social constitution of the readership of The Sun newspaper. Those reading the Sun are usually people from working class backgrounds who have predominantly shown allegiance with the Labour Party, opposed to high brow readers of The Times for example who would predominantly be Conservative supporters. In essence if a paper such as The Sun writes propaganda in support of a particular political party you are likely to see that support translated into votes by its readership at the next General Election. The article purported ‘The Sun's announcement - under the banner headline "Labour's Lost It" - came just hours after Mr Brown left the stage in Brighton after delivering a make-or-break speech designed to energise supporters and improve Labour's dismal standing in the polls. Mr Brown tried to play down its impact: "It's the British people that decide the Election, it's the British people's views that I am interested in... I think Sun readers actually, when they look at what I say, they will agree with what I said." Mr Cameron welcomed the paper's support, but insisted it would not lead to him becoming complacent. "I think they have seen the Government is exhausted and out of ideas and they see a regenerated, refreshed Conservative Party ready to serve."’ As Christians it is important that we pray for our political leaders, let us pray that God will ensure that the right person is put in charge following the next election. Labour may have Lost it according to The Sun but we know that our God still sits on His Throne and will do forever and ever. Amen!
