The 12 in suburbia
Its incredible that this quiet tranquil scene nestles just around 3 miles from the bustle of Edinburgh's Princes Street. Back in 1930 as city centre tenements were cleared so new housing was built on hitherto private estates as seen here at Craigentinny. A detached bungalow would cost the princely sum of £600 or you could go for a semi at £450, ( £37,000 and £28,000 today's money but a very lot more in todays house values!)
LRT 436, a 1974 Atlantean en route to Hay Drive is seen pausing in Craigentinny Avenue. Buses on route 12 served this area from 1954 and provided a useful link into the city via Seafield and Leith Walk. Despite good patronage Lothian decided to scale back the service leaving this part of Craigentinny with no bus service these days. Seen in the background is the local parish church, St Christophers, built with variegated red brick and red roof tiles and bell-tower in 1934, the foundation stone laid by '39 Steps' author John Buchan.
