Three Sisters

Director: Piotr Ratajczak

The Chekhov of Zielona Góra is a Chekhov steeped deeply in History. The biographies of the protagonists of the Three Sisters were appended with the entire 20th century. The plot begins, as Stanisławski commanded, in costumes from the period of cherry orchards and flirting holidaymakers; later the world of the garrison town is visited by Orwell and the Holocaust. Every successive sequence accounts for the dreams of the bygone sisters with the use of multimedia technology. On behalf of Chekhov’s protagonists, actors shout out into microphones their disenchantment with life, politics, capitalism, and the media. Three sisters versus Hitler, Stalin, and Castro. Vershynin and Vietnam, Tuzenbach and euthanasia. Ratajczak quarters Chekhov’s drama, destroys its assumptions, construction, and protagonists to show the bitter epilogue of his and our hopes.
