Gloves, a Glove Box and Glove Stretchers
When my Great Grandmother was a young debutante attending balls, and my Grandmother after her, it was social etiquette for women and men alike to wear white evening gloves when dancing, often taking several pairs to an occasion to exchange for a fresh pair across the course of an evening. People wore white gloves for dancing to adhere to a strict historical etiquette. Preventing sweaty hands from soiling delicate gowns, demonstrate social status and respectability, and as a practical accessory for the formal dress code of balls and evening events from the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries.
The theme for "Smile on Saturday" the 27th of September is "begins with G", a theme where it is required to take a photo where something beginning with the letter G should be the main subject of the picture. In this case, I have managed to capture a few items that begin with the letter G, all of which belonged to my Great Grandmother. First and foremost, we have a selection of her white kid evening gloves (the first G) which she wore for dancing. Secondly, they are displayed lying in her late Victorian glove box (second G) which is made of tooled and gilt leather, lined with velvet. Lastly, still attached within the inside of the lid are her sterling silver glove stretchers (final G) which were used to stretch the fingers of gloves in order to make it easier for you to fit your fingers into your gloves. I think that makes this photo perfect for the theme! I do hope you like my choice for the theme and that it makes you smile!
