New England in the Fall (54 of 72).jpg

Three parallel locks and a fish pass link the Charles River to Boston harbour. Immediately beyond is the southern cable-stay pier of the Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge. The latter was built as part of Boston's Big Dig the largest highway construction project in the Untied States.

The environment in the centre of Boston has benefited from the burial of the two interstate roads and replacement of an ugly elevated road by a pleasant boulevard.
