Meteor Flash

Note: this image is part of a set showing some of the updates I have made to my Meteor camera. To see all images and read a description of the set, go here.

Here is the Meteor with the working Mercury flash unit attached. More than anything else, I was quite pleased to get the flash circuit working on this camera, not just because they are rarely in working order when you find them, but because I learned so much about them in the process. In particular, that the convoluted and clunky design of the flash circuit is what leads to so many other problems with these cameras. For example the problem of lenses getting stuck in the open or closed position is often to blame on a pair of silly bent tabs inside the box. These metal contacts are designed to provide an electrical path for the flash, but more often than not get mangled up to the point of interfering with the movement of the lens assembly.

The larger size bulb (an 11B shown here I think) was what this flash unit was designed for, although in practice I have only used the smaller press bulbs (#5, #25, etc.), via an adapter.
