-isms 9: pacifism

opposition to war or violence of any kind.

refusal to engage in military activity because of one's principles or beliefs.

the principle or policy that all differences among nations should be adjusted without recourse to war.

 

i went back and forth on whether this should be idealism or pacifism.

 

In the end, i wanted to talk about pacifism. i am very loosely Quaker. And Quakers have a long history of not believing that violence or oppression are solutions to problems.

 

i believe in what Jimmy Carter said, that some wars may be necessary evils, but they are all evils.

 

There are things i would fight for, but they are very few and far between and it really does leave my heart hurting that governments reach for weapons and militaries before they do for diplomacy. i'm not simple, or naive, i know that sometimes things are too complicated to be solved by taking time outs and eating cookies. But i also know that when we go to war, more people lose than win.

 

So, i do, i do, i do imagine all the people living life in peace.

 

i don't care if that makes me sound like a beauty pageant contestant.
