Dropping resistor
I replaced the first dropping resistor in the power supply, too (the shiny white box). The old wirewound resistor was cracked, chipped, and rather corroded on the leads and internally as well. The modern Xicon replacement is epoxy sealed and so should last a rather long time.
This swap makes almost as much difference as the caps themselves. The old resistor, while it still read right at 500r, was so corroded inside it was probably responsible for a good deal of the static, hum, and popping as slight intermittent shorts developed inside it.
