The Chicago Great Western Lives! Nutrien Ag Solutions ShuttleWagon Car Mover at Walnut Street Byron IL

There are only three sections of the former Chicago Great Western still in use today in Illinois, and the longest one is in Byron. It was retained when the C&NW abandoned the rest of the CGW for rail service to the Commonwealth Edison Byron nuclear power plant. ComEd parent Excelon owns most of the CGW remnant in Byron and CPKC provides service as needed including over the massive Rock River bridge. Movements by rail to and from the power plant are very rare.

The far western end is used by Nutrien Ag Solutions to receive cars from CPKC on its former Milwaukee Road mainline where the MILW once crossed the CGW. In these views the Nutrien ShuttleMobile car mover is shuffling cars on the former CGW mainline and a siding. Nutrien is one of the only CPKC customers left between Elgin and Savanna on this line.
