South Chicago Packing in Chicago's South Side Bridgeport neighborhood is one of the last companies still operating from the meat packing days of this area. It receives tank cars of edible beef tallow for processing into various food ingredients.
South Chicago Packing has its own car mover for shuffling around the tank cars on its tracks.
It was the first time I caught this Norfolk Southern job working the area in 15 years of passing through.
At one time the Bridgeport neighborhood on its west side had a maze of railroad tracks that weaved in and around industries including the massive Spiegel mail order company on 35th Street which was a customer. In recent decades Bridgeport has started to gentrify and the railroad tracks along with the industries they served mostly disappeared.
Bridgeport is best known as the home of the Chicago White Sox on its east side and the infamous Bubbly Creek on its western border.
