Chicago Surface Lines Streetcar Crossing Milwaukee Road C&E Line At Wrigley Field-Chicago Circa 1955
This view looks north along the Milwaukee Road Chicago & Evanston branch line where it crossed Clark and Addison Streets. In the distance on the right is Wrigley Field. Boxcars are parked alongside Wrigley Field on the Milwaukee Road team track. The Chicago Cubs were a customer of the Milwaukee Road. A CSL "Green Hornet" PCC streetcar is crossing the MILW tracks going southeast on Clark Street. It looks like the Cubs or the Bears are playing from the WGN TV truck parked alongside the front of the stadium.
I would date this photo to between 1955 and 1958 as the latest model car shown is a white '55 Packard on the left. It could have been 1954 if the Packard was bought early in the '55 model year launch. Crossing the MILW C&E Line is a Chicago Surface Lines streetcar and streetcar service in Chicago ended in 1958. The Collins & Weise Coal Company which was also a MILW customer shut down sometime in the early 1960s.
The Milwaukee Road C&E Line at one time went all the way into Wilmette from downtown Chicago. A predecessor of the CTA took over operations including freight from the MILW north of Iriving Park Road and interchanged with the MILW at Buena Yard. The C&E Line was cut back in stages starting in 1973 when it was abandoned north of Racine Avenue and enough track left in place to service a fuel oil dealer there. It was then cut back to just north of Belmont Avenue to service Reed Candy at Fletcher and Lakewood, then the last cut was at Diversey in 1983 to continue service to Peerless Confection. Peerless closed in 2007 which was the end of service north of Clybourn Avenue other than two non-revenue moves by successor Chicago Terminal in 2009. It is long since abandoned now.
