Shortline holding company Genesse & Wyoming operates the San Diego & Imperial Valley on two branch lines that radiate out from the center of the city including one to the Mexican border at San Ysidro and Tijuana.
The line to San Ysidro shares trackage for much of the route with the trolley system so apparently freight trains run at night. At the border the SD&IV interchanges with the Baja California Railroad in Mexico. It also has a few online customers between the border and San Diego.
