Another look at Saint Stephen's, Moreton Valence (2)
The south aisle was added during the 15th century, when this classy entrance was built. Although strictly Perpendicular in period, it foreshadows later Tudor style, with its four centred arch, and the decoration in the spandrels, and the drip mould, have a very "cotswold" feel to them. The door itself is made from five jointed oak boards, cross boarded and braced on the inside, and studded with iron nails. It has been sympathetically restored at some time in the past, new sections being inserted near the base. I'm not sure of its exact age, it is certainly very ancient, and may well date from the time of the construction of the south aisle, and thus could be 500 + years old.
