The Junior Squad prepare to lead the procession. The Lerwick Up Helly Aa is a fabulous fire festival that takes place on the last Tuesday in January. Around 900 men, all in costume, carry flaming torches and drag a Viking longboat through the streets and then set fire to it by throwing the torches into it. The procession is spectacular and attracts people from all around the world.
