Visited my favorite farm today with a friend who likes to call our trips "PhotoFun". In addition to many shots of crops and flowers on the farm, I, as often I do, sought some people to photograph.
He was just parking one of the tractors (Not your normal farm equipment, he said. They're air conditioned and have a stereo so I can listen to music while I'm out working). I asked if he knew the owner (who I had met at another time), not knowing that he was her husband. He answered, oh I'm the farmer's wife. We all had a good laugh at that slip, and he proceeded to give a lengthy history of how he and his wife came to own this farm. I mentioned what a wonderful place to visit in town, and how often I came to just sit and be still. He said, come back when the sun is setting. It's really beautiful to sit and watch. I agree as I have visited different times of day and seasons to photograph this farm.
My friend continued the conversation as I took more than my usual three shots for my stranger portraits. I'd like to defend my choice to "high key" it to create a sense of how bright the sun was. This could have ruined the shot because of harsh contrast, but by adjusting blend modes, levels and a bit of desaturation, I was content with the skin tones and the high key background.
