The MAJESTIC THEATRE opened in New York City in 1927. One of the largest Broadway theatres with 1607 seats, it traditionally has been used as a venue for major musical theatre productions. Among the notable shows that have premiered at the Majestic are Carousel (1945), South Pacific (1949), The Music Man (1957), Camelot (1960), A Little Night Music (1973), and The Wiz (1975). It was also the second home of 42nd Street and the third home of 1776. The theatre has housed The Phantom of the Opera since it opened In 1988.
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA IS Andrew Lloyd Webber's smash musicalization of the Gaston Leroux novel: The Phantom reigns in the netherworld beneath the stage of the Paris Opera House. Bizarrely deformed, he passes his time terrorizes the members of the Opera, a bit of payback for his condition he believes. But this is a love story and it comes to pass that he falls in love with a young singer. The love is not unrequited.
With more than 8000 performances, Phantom is the longest-running production in Broadway history.
