Philogiston Theory of Electronics

When I asked him if he had been influenced by “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance,” he handed me a yellowed sheet of paper, which held the gist of his own philosophy, not entirely Zen, about what makes a motorcycle mechanic tick, or at least laugh out loud. It was an anonymous tract entitled “The Philogiston Theory of Electronics.” The title relates to a bizarre seventeenth-century theory that posits that all flammable materials contain something called phlogiston, a substance unleashed by burning, after which the materials attain their true state.
