a winter view of beeston castle Cheshire perched on an isolated crag overlooking the Cheshire plain ,it was built on the orders of ranulf earl of chester in the 1220's
it was garrisoned by parliament in the civil war , and captured in 1643
the legend is that royalist captain Thomas Sandford and eight musketeers scaled the crag at night and forced the startled garrison to surrender
looking at it , this seems a little unlikely and perhaps treachery played a part
the governor , retired cheese dealer thomas steele was allowed to march his troops out and return to nanwich
sadly his superiors there took a dim view of his actions and had him shot behind nantwich church !
