A major step forward in aerodynamic improvements will be the introduction of “Sharklets” beginning with A320ceo (current engine option) Family aircraft, which will add over 100 nautical miles in range, increase payload by more than 500 kg. and improve takeoff performance. These wingtip devices will offer a more than 3.5 per cent overall fuel burn savings on long sectors and are to result in up to two per cent lower engine maintenance costs due to the lower thrust required when Sharklets are installed.
Sharklets took to the sky for the first time in November 2011 with a successful five-hour maiden flight from Toulouse, France using Airbus’ in-house A320 development aircraft.
