True Grit

Just a few short years ago, I never had any idea of what it was really like to be a father. I've always wanted to be a dad, but i've always questioned deep down wether or not I was fit for such an incredible amount of dedication and responsibility.

When Chase came along nearly 4 years ago, everything changed. I was now making a transition from roaming boomer railroader with a footloose and fancy-free lifestyle to a full-time father and future hockey and baseball dad, but I never imagined that i'd get the chance to be a train dad also.

Since Chase was about a year and a half old, he has always been keeping an eye on trains, and wondering what exactly they do. His love for them at his age is almost unimaginable, as he is frequently looking thru pics and identfying locomotives by road name. To have someone this close to me who shares a love for railroading like me in my mind can be none other than some sort of special gift from the lord, a gift in which you unwrap slowly as the years progress.

Although Chase has been on many local expeditions with me for the last year or so, this shot taken by Kenny Oberneder on an ex-IC waycar at Jasonville, IN marks his first "real" adventure out with the boys, and all of us had an awesome time, but more importantly, I think that Chase and I found it to be a chapter written in a book of many great things to come as time progresses. I've learned from this trip that you only get to be a dad once, and thats if you're lucky.......So enjoy the great moments while they are to be had, before the opportunites pass you, and more importantly, your kids by.

This shot is for you Chase, cheers to many, many years of fun together, just like this day. I love you dearly, your the best little guy that a dad could ever hope to have!!!!
