I've been catching up on some movies as of late. I saw "Host."
I think I liked the concept of the Host better than it's execution. There were for me some large breaks in reality that I would find impossible to believe even if this was Sci-fi. The premise of the movie is an alien race has landed on earth. They find humans, inhabit their bodies giving them startling blue eyes, and allegedly turn the planet into a better place saving it and us from ourselves because the inhabited humans become polite, respectful, and environmentally conscious zombies. Unfortunately for the invaders, a few select humans have chosen to resist, hiding out in the desert mountains to avoid the mind meld or committing suicide to avoid being taken. So the aliens have taken over the planet essentially, but the resisters are found by one girl named Melanie who is inhabited by another whom they named Wanda, a shortened version of Wanderer. My problem with most alien invasion tales, is how absolutely insanely dedicated to killing off or in this case, invading, a small section of resisters is. If you're the all important, all seeing eye of the alien race, I'm hard pressed to believe you would spend so much time and resources on catching 20 people or so. Even hand sanitizers only kill off 99.9 percent of germs...there will always be a point percent that survives or mutates to survive.
The aliens point out that they've gotten probably like 95% of the planet already. Even if all the resistors had children, and why would they b/c that would make detection easier, they would never be able to fight that big of an invasion. Case in point for this level of ridiculousness...all of the movie "Skyline." You've killed off most if not all the people, but you spend 2 hours of a movie trying to get at 10 people and won't quit until you've got the ten, I mean, really? Doesn't make me think that aliens are all that smart.
The second thing, is it quite honestly seemed to me that if the resistors just went to a Halloween shop and bought some scary eye contacts, they could have just gone about living in society as is, because the aliens didn't have any other way of detecting whether or not someone was human or alien other then the eyes and if they were doing only human like things, like going faster then the speed limit, or stealing, or wearing sunglasses at night.
Third, for an alien race that claims to be so respectful and nice and not like humans at all, why did they have guns, why were they chasing down people and capturing them as such. The only time they said things seemed to go "too far" was when one of them shot one of their own in an attempt to get the humans.
Fourth was, if you are an alien race, one assumes you have your own way of doing things and ways you live, yet they invade only to inhabit the bodies and live exactly like humans live except nicer or better to each other. Where is the fun in invading a planet if your goal is to be just like them? Most people who overthrow people have no desire to then become just like the thing they've overthrown. Doesn't make sense.
Fifth, early in the movie, the Seekers, or aliens imply that humans have really strong urges that apparently the aliens do not, yet Wanda, without provocation, seems eager to make out with another human, a desire which technically she should not posses. We could claim it was the inner Melanie, but she is the one that actually resists. Continuity?!?
I'd say out of 5 stars, this was like a 3. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good either. I mostly spent the movie drooling over the chrome cars and the chrome helicopter and admiring the cave set which would be a pretty awesome place to hide out.
