Copper wire & air

Hot copper wire imparts a distinctive green color to aerated Bunsen flame. However, copper does not actually burn in air, it just oxidizes superficially giving a layer of copper I and II oxides (cuprous and cupric oxide). The flame color is thought to be caused by little copper vapor.
