Koori fish traps
A distinctive feature of the headland beach are the aboriginal fish traps at the start of the rock shelf surrounding the headland on the northern side . The traps are unique and are reported as being a thousand years old . They consist of three rectangular square areas of pilled rock walls 2-2.5' feet high . The most complete being the middle one where I remember hand-spearing fish ( Tarwhine ) myself while snorkelling at full tide in the late 60's and early 70's . A definite No No now the whole headland has been declared part of the Solitary Islands Marine Park on the national register of marine parks . The harvesting of anything alive or dead in the the area around the headland is now strictly forbidden . The Garby Elders , members of the Yarrawarra Aboriginal Corporation are decedents of the original Cumbainggie people and as such are allowed at special times of the year to utilise the traps to catch fish using traditional methods .
