England Expects That Every Man Will Do His Duty, Holy Trinity Church, Barsham, Suffolk

"England Expects That Every Man Will Do His Duty" - the signal that was sent by Admiral Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson from his flagship HMS Victory as the Battle of Trafalgar was about to commence on 21 October 1805.

Barsham Holy Trinity is one of 38 existing round-tower churches in Suffolk and a Grade I listed building.

The flint nave is thatched whilst the chancel is tiled. The two bay North Aisle was added in the early 1900s and is dedicated as a chapel to St Catherine.

On the 8th February 1906 lightning struck the east end of the church destroying the stonework of the east window. The fund raised to repair this damage also paid for the building of the north aisle as the chapel of St Catherine. In 1979, a fire destroyed the nave roof.

Horatio Nelson's mother Catherine Suckling was born in the former rectory on 9 May 1725
